EIAR Orchestra, Turin, also known as the Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della Rai, is a classical music ensemble based in Turin, Italy. The orchestra was founded in 1931 by the Italian national broadcasting company, EIAR (Ente Italiano per le Audizioni Radiofoniche), which later became RAI (Radiotelevisione Italiana). The founding of the orchestra was part of a larger effort by EIAR to promote Italian culture and music through radio broadcasts. The orchestra's first conductor was the Italian composer and conductor, Arturo Toscanini, who led the ensemble in its inaugural concert on November 5, 1931. The concert featured works by Italian composers such as Verdi, Rossini, and Puccini, and was broadcast live on the radio. Over the years, the orchestra has had many notable conductors, including Victor de Sabata, Carlo Maria Giulini, Lorin Maazel, and Riccardo Muti. The ensemble has also collaborated with many renowned soloists, including pianists Martha Argerich and Maurizio Pollini, violinist Itzhak Perlman, and cellist Yo-Yo Ma. One of the orchestra's most significant achievements was its participation in the 1956 Venice Biennale, where it performed the world premiere of Luigi Dallapiccola's opera, "Il Prigioniero." The performance was a critical and commercial success, and helped to establish the orchestra's reputation as one of Italy's leading classical music ensembles. In addition to its performances in Italy, the orchestra has also toured extensively throughout Europe, Asia, and the Americas. One of its most notable tours was a 1986 tour of the United States, where it performed in major cities such as New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles. Over the years, the orchestra has received many awards and accolades for its performances and recordings. In 1959, it was awarded the Grand Prix du Disque for its recording of Verdi's "Requiem." In 1987, it received a Grammy Award for Best Opera Recording for its recording of Puccini's "Turandot." Today, the EIAR Orchestra, Turin continues to be one of Italy's leading classical music ensembles, and is known for its high-quality performances and recordings. Its current conductor is Gianandrea Noseda, who has been with the orchestra since 2007. Under his leadership, the ensemble has continued to push the boundaries of classical music, and has collaborated with a wide range of contemporary composers and performers.
