Youra Guller was a French classical pianist born on October 20, 1895, in Baku, Azerbaijan. She was born into a family of musicians, and her father was a violinist. Guller began playing the piano at a young age and showed exceptional talent. She studied at the St. Petersburg Conservatory in Russia, where she was a student of Anna Yesipova, a renowned pianist and teacher. In 1917, Guller moved to Paris, where she continued her studies with Isidor Philipp, a French pianist and teacher. She made her debut in Paris in 1920, performing Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 with the Lamoureux Orchestra. Her performance was well-received, and she quickly gained a reputation as a talented pianist. Guller's career took off in the 1920s and 1930s, and she became known for her interpretations of the works of Chopin, Beethoven, and Schumann. She was particularly admired for her ability to convey the emotional depth and complexity of these composers' music. Guller was also known for her technical skill, and she was praised for her precise and powerful playing. In 1937, Guller performed at the International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw, Poland. She was one of the few non-Polish pianists to participate in the competition, and her performance was highly acclaimed. She was awarded third prize, behind two Polish pianists, and her performance of Chopin's Sonata No. 3 in B minor was particularly praised. During World War II, Guller continued to perform, despite the difficult circumstances. She gave concerts for French soldiers and prisoners of war, and she also performed for the German occupying forces. Her decision to perform for the Germans was controversial, and she was criticized by some for collaborating with the enemy. However, others saw her performances as a way to bring comfort and hope to those who were suffering. After the war, Guller's career continued to flourish. She performed throughout Europe and the United States, and she also recorded extensively. Her recordings of Chopin's music are particularly highly regarded, and they are still considered some of the best interpretations of his work. In addition to her performing career, Guller was also a respected teacher. She taught at the Paris Conservatory and the École Normale de Musique de Paris, and she had many students who went on to have successful careers as pianists. Guller's health began to decline in the 1960s, and she retired from performing in 1965. She died on May 28, 1980, in Paris, at the age of 84. Throughout her career, Guller was recognized for her contributions to classical music. She was awarded the Legion of Honor, one of France's highest honors, in 1958, and she was also awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1970. In addition, she was made a Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters by the French government in 1975. Youra Guller was a talented and influential pianist who made significant contributions to the world of classical music. Her performances and recordings continue to be admired and studied by musicians and music lovers around the world.
