His parents were both musicians, and they encouraged him to pursue music from a young age. Costariol showed a keen interest in music and started playing the piano at the age of six. He studied at the Conservatorio Benedetto Marcello in Venice, where he received a solid foundation in music theory and performance. Costariol's career as a professional musician began in the 1950s when he started performing with various orchestras in Italy. In 1956, he made his debut in the United States, performing with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. The performance was a huge success, and Costariol received critical acclaim for his exceptional performance. Over the years, Costariol performed with some of the most prestigious orchestras in the world, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. He also collaborated with some of the most renowned conductors, including Herbert von Karajan, Leonard Bernstein, and Claudio Abbado. One of Costariol's most significant achievements was his performance of the complete Bach Cello Suites. He recorded the suites in 1962, and the recording became a benchmark for all subsequent recordings of the suites.
