Denson Paul Pollard is a renowned classical music artist who has made a significant impact in the world of music. Born on August 22, 1976, in Montgomery, Alabama, Pollard grew up in a family that was passionate about music. His father was a music teacher, and his mother was a choir director, which exposed him to music at a young age. Pollard's love for music began when he was just six years old, and he started playing the trombone. He was a natural talent and quickly became proficient in playing the instrument. He continued to hone his skills throughout his childhood and teenage years, and by the time he was ready to attend college, he was already a skilled trombonist. In 1994, Pollard enrolled at the University of Alabama, where he studied music education. During his time at the university, he was a member of the Million Dollar Band, the university's marching band, and the Alabama Wind Ensemble. He also played in the Tuscaloosa Symphony Orchestra and the Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. After graduating from the University of Alabama in 1998, Pollard went on to pursue a master's degree in music performance at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. While at the university, he was a member of the university's Wind Symphony and Symphony Orchestra. He also won the prestigious International Trombone Association's Frank Smith Solo Competition in 2000. After completing his master's degree, Pollard began his professional career as a trombonist. He joined the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra in 2003, where he has been a member ever since. He has also performed with other renowned orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Pollard's talent as a trombonist has earned him numerous accolades throughout his career. In 2006, he was awarded the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant, which recognizes outstanding instrumentalists who have demonstrated exceptional talent and promise for the future. He was also a recipient of the Sphinx Medal of Excellence in 2011, which recognizes extraordinary classical musicians of color. Pollard has also been a dedicated educator throughout his career. He has served as a faculty member at the Juilliard School, the Manhattan School of Music, and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He has also given masterclasses and workshops at universities and music schools around the world. In addition to his work as a trombonist and educator, Pollard is also a composer. He has written several pieces for trombone, including "Three Miniatures for Trombone and Piano" and "Sonata for Trombone and Piano."
