Altamiro Carrilho was a Brazilian flutist and composer who was born on December 21, 1924, in Santo Antônio de Pádua, Rio de Janeiro. He was the son of a musician and began playing the flute at a young age. Carrilho's father was a flutist and encouraged his son to pursue music. Carrilho's father was also a band leader, and Carrilho began playing in his father's band when he was just 12 years old. Carrilho's musical education began at the National School of Music in Rio de Janeiro, where he studied with Joaquim Antonio da Silva Callado Junior. He later studied with the renowned flutist and composer, Benedito Lacerda. Carrilho's talent as a flutist was evident from a young age, and he quickly became known for his virtuosic playing. In the 1940s, Carrilho began performing with some of the most famous Brazilian musicians of the time, including Pixinguinha, Jacob do Bandolim, and Radamés Gnattali. He also began composing his own music, and his first composition, "Um Chorinho em Aldeia," was recorded in 1949. Carrilho's music was heavily influenced by Brazilian choro music, which is a genre of instrumental music that originated in Rio de Janeiro in the late 19th century. Choro music is characterized by its fast-paced rhythms and intricate melodies, and Carrilho became one of the most important figures in the genre. In the 1950s, Carrilho began touring internationally, performing in Europe and the United States. He also continued to compose music, and his most famous composition, "Pedacinhos do Céu," was recorded in 1950. The song became a hit in Brazil and has since become a classic of Brazilian music. Carrilho's music was also featured in several films, including "Orfeu Negro" (Black Orpheus) and "O Cangaceiro" (The Bandit). He also composed music for television and theater productions. Throughout his career, Carrilho was known for his virtuosic playing and his ability to blend traditional Brazilian music with modern jazz and classical influences. He was also a prolific composer, and his music has been recorded by some of the most famous Brazilian musicians of all time, including Elis Regina, Gal Costa, and João Gilberto. Carrilho continued to perform and compose music until his death on August 15, 2012, at the age of 87. He left behind a legacy as one of the most important figures in Brazilian music, and his music continues to be celebrated and performed around the world.
