AustriaBirth:March 19, 1767Death:February 19, 1815Period:ClassicalGenre:ChamberLeonhard Von Call was a classical music composer born on October 19, 1767, in Eichstätt, Bavaria. He was the son of a court musician and was introduced to music at a young age. His father recognized his talent and began teaching him music theory and composition. By the age of 12, Call had already composed several pieces of music. Call's family moved to Vienna when he was 16 years old, where he continued his music education under the tutelage of Joseph Haydn. Haydn recognized Call's talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. Call also studied with other prominent composers of the time, including Johann Georg Albrechtsberger and Antonio Salieri. In 1790, Call was appointed as the Kapellmeister of the court of Prince Ferdinand of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. He held this position for 20 years and composed many works for the court. During this time, he also composed music for the theater and opera. One of Call's most famous works is his Symphony No. 1 in C major, which he composed in 1792. The symphony is a four-movement work that showcases Call's skill as a composer. The first movement is a lively allegro, followed by a slow and lyrical adagio. The third movement is a minuet and trio, and the final movement is a fast and energetic allegro. Call also composed several operas during his career, including "Die Schwestern von Prag" and "Die beiden Königskinder." His opera "Die Schwestern von Prag" premiered in 1794 and was well-received by audiences. The opera tells the story of two sisters who fall in love with the same man, and the drama that ensues. In addition to his work as a composer, Call was also a respected music teacher. He taught at the Vienna Conservatory and had many notable students, including Franz Schubert and Johann Nepomuk Hummel. Call's music was highly regarded during his lifetime, but his reputation declined after his death in 1815. However, in recent years, there has been renewed interest in his music, and his works have been performed and recorded by modern orchestras. Overall, Leonhard Von Call was a talented composer who made significant contributions to classical music during his lifetime. His works showcase his skill as a composer and his ability to create music that is both beautiful and engaging.More....
