Hsueh-Yung Shen was a renowned classical music composer born on December 28, 1949, in Taipei, Taiwan. He was the youngest of six children in his family and showed an early interest in music. His father was a music teacher, and his mother was a pianist, which provided him with a musical environment from a young age. Shen began his formal music education at the age of six, studying piano with his mother. He later studied composition and theory at the National Taiwan Academy of Arts, where he received his Bachelor of Music degree in 1972. He then went on to study at the University of Michigan, where he earned his Master of Music degree in 1975 and his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in 1978. During his time at the University of Michigan, Shen studied with renowned composers such as Leslie Bassett, William Bolcom, and George Wilson. He also had the opportunity to work with visiting composers such as György Ligeti and Krzysztof Penderecki, who had a significant influence on his musical style. Shen's music is characterized by its use of traditional Chinese music elements, such as pentatonic scales and Chinese instruments, combined with Western classical music techniques. His compositions often explore themes of cultural identity and the relationship between Eastern and Western music. One of Shen's most notable works is his Symphony No. 1, which was commissioned by the National Symphony Orchestra of Taiwan in 1984. The symphony is divided into three movements, each of which explores a different aspect of Taiwanese culture. The first movement, "Mountain," is inspired by the mountainous landscape of Taiwan and features a solo erhu, a traditional Chinese instrument. The second movement, "Sea," is inspired by the ocean and features a solo sheng, another traditional Chinese instrument. The final movement, "City," is inspired by the bustling city life of Taipei and features a solo piano. Another notable work by Shen is his Concerto for Pipa and Orchestra, which was commissioned by the Singapore Symphony Orchestra in 1999. The pipa is a traditional Chinese instrument similar to a lute, and Shen's concerto combines the pipa with Western classical instruments to create a unique sound. The concerto is divided into three movements, each of which explores a different aspect of Chinese culture. In addition to his compositions, Shen was also a respected music educator. He taught at the National Taiwan Academy of Arts and the Taipei National University of the Arts, where he was the dean of the School of Music from 1997 to 2000. He also taught at the University of Michigan and the University of California, Santa Barbara. Shen's contributions to the world of classical music were recognized with numerous awards and honors. He was awarded the National Award for Arts in Taiwan in 1998 and the Cultural Medal of Honor in 2005. He was also a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a member of the Academia Sinica, Taiwan's highest academic institution. Tragically, Shen passed away on December 18, 2019, at the age of 70. His legacy lives on through his compositions and the countless musicians he inspired and taught throughout his career.
