Daniel Steibelt was a German-born composer and pianist who lived from 1765 to 1823. He was born in Berlin to a family of musicians, and his father was a well-known oboist. Steibelt began his musical education at a young age, studying piano with his father and later with Johann Philipp Kirnberger, a student of Johann Sebastian Bach. Steibelt's early career was marked by success as a performer and composer. He toured extensively throughout Europe, performing in major cities such as Paris, London, and Vienna. He was particularly well-known for his virtuosic piano playing, which was characterized by his use of rapid arpeggios and flashy runs. In addition to his performing career, Steibelt was also a prolific composer. He wrote a wide variety of music, including piano sonatas, concertos, chamber music, and operas. His music was popular during his lifetime, and he was often compared favorably to his contemporaries such as Mozart and Beethoven. One of Steibelt's most famous works is his Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat major, which was composed in 1796. The concerto is notable for its virtuosic piano writing, which features rapid runs and arpeggios, as well as its use of the newly-invented pedal piano. The concerto was a great success when it was first performed, and it remains a popular work in the piano repertoire today. Another notable work by Steibelt is his opera Romeo et Juliette, which was composed in 1793. The opera is based on the famous Shakespeare play, and it features a libretto by the French writer Jean-Francois Marmontel. The opera was well-received when it was first performed, and it was praised for its beautiful melodies and dramatic intensity. Despite his early success, Steibelt's career began to decline in the early 19th century.
