Susan Greenberg is a renowned classical flutist who has made a significant impact on the world of music. Born in Los Angeles, California, on August 22, 1955, Greenberg grew up in a family of musicians. Her father was a violinist, and her mother was a pianist. From a young age, Greenberg showed a keen interest in music and began playing the flute at the age of nine. Greenberg's talent was evident from the start, and she quickly became a standout performer. She attended the University of Southern California, where she earned a Bachelor of Music degree in flute performance. She then went on to study at the Juilliard School in New York City, where she earned a Master of Music degree. After completing her studies, Greenberg began her professional career as a flutist. She quickly gained recognition for her exceptional talent and was invited to perform with some of the most prestigious orchestras in the world. In 1981, she joined the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra as principal flutist, a position she held for over 30 years. Throughout her career, Greenberg has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. She has also collaborated with some of the most renowned conductors, including Leonard Bernstein, Zubin Mehta, and Esa-Pekka Salonen. In addition to her work as an orchestral musician, Greenberg is also an accomplished chamber musician. She has performed with many of the world's leading chamber ensembles, including the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and the Los Angeles Piano Quartet. She is also a founding member of the California Quartet, a group that has gained critical acclaim for its innovative programming and exceptional musicianship. Greenberg's talent has been recognized with numerous awards and honors throughout her career. In 1980, she was a winner of the Young Concert Artists International Auditions, which helped launch her career as a soloist. She has also been awarded the Coleman Chamber Music Award, the Avery Fisher Career Grant, and the Los Angeles Music Center's Spotlight Award. Greenberg is also a dedicated educator and has taught at many of the world's leading music schools, including the Juilliard School, the Colburn School, and the University of Southern California. She is currently a professor of flute at the Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California. In addition to her work as a performer and educator, Greenberg is also a passionate advocate for new music. She has commissioned and premiered many new works for the flute, including pieces by John Harbison, Joan Tower, and Steven Stucky. Throughout her career, Greenberg has remained committed to excellence in music performance and education. Her exceptional talent and dedication have made her one of the most respected and admired flutists of her generation.
