Born on October 30, 1917, in Petrograd (now St. Petersburg), Marly grew up in a family of musicians. Her father, Boris Marly, was a composer and conductor, and her mother, Maria, was a singer. Marly began studying music at a young age and showed a talent for singing and playing the guitar. In 1922, Marly's family fled Russia during the Russian Revolution and settled in Harbin, China. There, Marly continued her music studies and began performing in local clubs and theaters. In 1931, the family moved to Paris, where Marly continued her music education at the École Normale de Musique de Paris. During World War II, Marly joined the French Resistance and began performing for soldiers and prisoners of war. She wrote and performed songs that became anthems of the Resistance, including "Le Chant des Partisans" ("The Partisan Song"), which she co-wrote with Joseph Kessel and Maurice Druon. The song became a symbol of the Resistance and was later adopted as the national anthem of France. Marly's other notable works include "La Complainte du Partisan" ("The Partisan's Lament"), "La Marseillaise des Blancs" ("The White Marseillaise"), and "La Marseillaise des Noirs" ("The Black Marseillaise"). She also wrote music for films, including "Les Enfants Terribles" and "Le Salaire de la Peur." After the war, Marly continued to perform and record music. She moved to the United States in 1952 and became a citizen in 1956. She continued to write and perform music until her death on February 15, 2006, in Monte Carlo, Monaco.
