Born on May 28, 1958, in Reykjavik, Iceland, Ingólfsson grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a composer and his mother was a pianist, which exposed him to music at a young age. Ingólfsson began his musical education at the Reykjavik College of Music, where he studied composition and conducting. He later continued his studies at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, Finland, where he received a diploma in composition. He also studied at the Royal College of Music in London, where he earned a Master of Music degree in composition. Ingólfsson's early works were heavily influenced by the Icelandic landscape and culture.
