Josep Brocà was a Spanish composer who was born on January 1, 1949, in Barcelona, Spain. He was the son of a musician and grew up in a family that was deeply involved in music. His father was a pianist and his mother was a singer, and they both encouraged him to pursue a career in music. Brocà began his musical education at a young age, studying piano and composition with his father. He later attended the Conservatori Superior de Música del Liceu in Barcelona, where he studied composition with Joan Guinjoan and piano with Albert Attenelle. He also studied at the Hochschule für Musik in Munich, Germany, where he studied with Karlheinz Stockhausen. Brocà's early works were influenced by the avant-garde music of the 1960s and 1970s, particularly the works of Stockhausen and Pierre Boulez. His compositions were characterized by their complex rhythms, unconventional harmonies, and use of electronic instruments. One of Brocà's early works, "Cantata per a la pau" (Cantata for Peace), was written in 1972 and was dedicated to the victims of the Vietnam War. The piece was performed in Barcelona and received critical acclaim for its powerful message and innovative musical style. In the 1980s, Brocà's music began to evolve, and he began to incorporate more traditional elements into his compositions. He began to use more tonal harmonies and melodic lines, and his works became more accessible to a wider audience. One of Brocà's most famous works is his "Concert per a piano i orquestra" (Concerto for Piano and Orchestra), which was written in 1985. The piece was commissioned by the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra and was premiered by the pianist Joaquín Achúcarro. The concerto is characterized by its virtuosic piano writing and its lush orchestration, and it has become one of Brocà's most popular works. Another notable work by Brocà is his "Simfonia núm. 1" (Symphony No. 1), which was written in 1990. The symphony is a large-scale work that is characterized by its use of traditional forms and its rich orchestration. The piece was premiered by the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra and was well-received by audiences and critics alike. In addition to his work as a composer, Brocà was also a respected music educator. He taught composition at the Conservatori Superior de Música del Liceu in Barcelona and was a visiting professor at several universities in Europe and the United States. Brocà continued to compose music throughout his life, and his later works were characterized by their simplicity and elegance. He passed away on December 31, 2018, at the age of 69, leaving behind a legacy of innovative and influential music.
