Henry Russell was a British composer, pianist, and singer who lived from 1812 to 1900. He was born in Sheerness, Kent, England, to a family of musicians. His father, William Russell, was a music teacher and composer, and his mother, Elizabeth, was a singer. Henry Russell showed an early interest in music and began composing at a young age. Russell's musical education began with his father, who taught him piano and composition. He also studied with the composer and pianist Charles Neate, who was a friend of the family. Neate recognized Russell's talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. In 1834, Russell moved to London to further his musical career. He quickly became a popular performer, known for his piano playing and singing. He performed in concerts and music halls throughout England, and his songs became popular with audiences. Russell's music was influenced by the popular music of his time, as well as by classical music. He wrote songs in a variety of styles, including ballads, comic songs, and patriotic songs. His most famous song, "A Life on the Ocean Wave," was written in 1838 and became a popular anthem for the British Navy. In addition to his popular songs, Russell also composed classical music. He wrote several operas, including "The Maid of Judah" and "The Gipsy's Warning," as well as instrumental music, including piano pieces and chamber music. Russell's music was well-received during his lifetime, and he was recognized as one of the leading composers of his time. He was also known for his philanthropy, and he donated money to various charitable causes throughout his life. Despite his success, Russell faced financial difficulties throughout his career. He was often in debt and had to rely on the support of friends and patrons to continue his work. In 1864, he was forced to declare bankruptcy, and he spent the rest of his life struggling to make ends meet. Despite his financial difficulties, Russell continued to compose music until his death in 1900. His music remains popular today, and his songs are still performed and recorded by musicians around the world.
