Role:ComposerBirth:1890Death:1973Genre:ChoralJoshua Lind was a classical music composer born on May 12, 1985, in New York City. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his mother being a pianist and his father a cellist. From a young age, Lind was exposed to classical music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Lind's parents recognized his talent and enrolled him in the Juilliard School's Pre-College Division when he was just eight years old. There, he studied piano with Yoheved Kaplinsky and composition with Samuel Adler. Lind continued his education at the Juilliard School, earning a Bachelor of Music degree in composition in 2007 and a Master of Music degree in composition in 2009. During his time at Juilliard, Lind's compositions began to gain recognition. In 2006, he won the Juilliard Orchestra Composition Competition for his piece "Symphony No. 1." The following year, he won the Juilliard Orchestra Composition Prize for his piece "Concerto for Piano and Orchestra." After completing his education at Juilliard, Lind moved to Europe to further his studies. He spent a year in Paris studying with composer Tristan Murail and then moved to Berlin, where he studied with composer Helmut Lachenmann. Lind's compositions are known for their complexity and use of extended techniques. He often incorporates unconventional sounds and textures into his works, such as the use of prepared piano or the manipulation of instruments to create new sounds. One of Lind's most notable works is his "Concerto for Piano and Orchestra," which was premiered by the Juilliard Orchestra in 2007. The piece is known for its virtuosic piano writing and intricate orchestration. It has since been performed by orchestras around the world, including the Berlin Philharmonic and the New York Philharmonic. Another notable work by Lind is his "String Quartet No. 1," which was premiered by the Arditti Quartet in 2011. The piece is known for its use of microtonality and unconventional playing techniques, such as bowing the strings with a credit card. In addition to his compositions, Lind is also an accomplished pianist. He has performed his own works as well as the works of other composers in concerts around the world. Lind's career was tragically cut short when he passed away in a car accident in 2014 at the age of 29. However, his legacy lives on through his compositions, which continue to be performed and admired by musicians and audiences alike.More....
