John Champ was born on May 15, 1985, in London, England. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a renowned pianist and his mother a violinist. From a young age, Champ showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Champ's parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. He began taking piano lessons with his father and quickly developed his skills. By the age of ten, he had already won several local competitions and was performing in public regularly. Champ's talent was soon recognized by the wider music community, and he was invited to perform at prestigious venues such as the Royal Albert Hall and the Barbican Centre. He also began to receive invitations to perform with orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. In 2001, Champ won the prestigious BBC Young Musician of the Year competition, which catapulted him to international fame. He was praised for his technical skill and musicality, and his performance of Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 was particularly lauded. Following his success at the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition, Champ began to receive invitations to perform at major international music festivals. He made his debut at the Salzburg Festival in 2002, where he performed with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. Champ's career continued to flourish, and he became known for his interpretations of the works of Chopin, Liszt, and Rachmaninoff. He also began to explore contemporary music, collaborating with composers such as John Adams and Thomas Adès. In 2008, Champ was awarded the International Classical Music Award for Best Young Artist. The following year, he was appointed a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music, where he had studied as a young pianist. Champ's performances continued to receive critical acclaim, and he was praised for his ability to bring new life to familiar works. In 2015, he released a recording of Chopin's complete Nocturnes, which was hailed as a landmark recording of the works. In addition to his performing career, Champ is also a dedicated teacher. He has taught at the Royal Academy of Music and the Royal College of Music, and has given masterclasses around the world.
