Mary Ruth Lown was born on May 12, 1985, in New York City. She grew up in a family of musicians, with her mother being a pianist and her father a cellist. From a young age, Mary Ruth showed a natural talent for music and began taking piano lessons at the age of four. As she grew older, Mary Ruth's love for music only intensified. She began studying the violin at the age of eight and quickly became proficient in the instrument. Her parents recognized her talent and encouraged her to pursue a career in music. Mary Ruth attended the Juilliard School in New York City, where she studied both piano and violin. She excelled in both instruments and was soon performing in concerts and recitals around the city. Her talent did not go unnoticed, and she was soon invited to perform with some of the most prestigious orchestras in the country. One of Mary Ruth's most memorable performances was with the New York Philharmonic in 2005. She was the soloist for Beethoven's Violin Concerto, and her performance was met with critical acclaim. The New York Times called her "a rising star in the classical music world" and praised her "virtuosic playing and emotional depth." Mary Ruth continued to perform with the New York Philharmonic and other orchestras around the world. She also began to focus more on her piano playing, and in 2010, she won the prestigious Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. Her performance of Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 3 was hailed as "a triumph of technical skill and musicality." In addition to her performances, Mary Ruth also began to compose her own music. Her compositions were heavily influenced by her classical training but also incorporated elements of jazz and other genres. Her first album, "Reflections," was released in 2012 and received critical acclaim. Mary Ruth's career continued to flourish, and she was soon recognized with numerous awards and honors. In 2015, she was awarded the Avery Fisher Career Grant, which is given to outstanding young musicians who show exceptional talent and promise. She was also named a MacArthur Fellow in 2017, which is one of the most prestigious awards in the arts. Despite her success, Mary Ruth remained humble and dedicated to her craft. She continued to perform and compose, always striving to improve and push the boundaries of classical music. Her passion for music was infectious, and she inspired countless young musicians to pursue their dreams. Tragically, Mary Ruth's life was cut short when she passed away in a car accident in 2019.
