Born on February 21, 1946, in Madison, Wisconsin, Daly grew up in a family of performers. Her father, James Daly, was a well-known actor, and her mother, Mary Hope Newell, was a stage actress. Daly's parents divorced when she was young, and she and her two sisters were raised by their mother. Daly showed an early interest in music and began taking piano lessons at the age of six. She also studied voice and performed in school musicals. After graduating from high school, Daly attended Brandeis University in Massachusetts, where she continued to study music and theater. She graduated in 1967 with a degree in drama. Daly began her professional career as an actress, appearing in off-Broadway productions and regional theater. In 1971, she made her Broadway debut in the musical "That Summer - That Fall." She went on to appear in several other Broadway productions, including "Gypsy," "The Seagull," and "Rabbit Hole." In addition to her work in theater, Daly has also appeared in numerous films and television shows. She is perhaps best known for her role as Detective Mary Beth Lacey in the television series "Cagney & Lacey," which aired from 1982 to 1988.
