Johnny Yim was born on May 15, 1985, in Los Angeles, California. He grew up in a family of musicians, with both his parents being professional classical musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. From a young age, Yim was exposed to classical music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Yim's parents recognized his talent and enrolled him in music lessons at a young age. He studied piano with his mother and later with renowned pianist, Lang Lang. Yim also studied composition with composer John Williams, who is known for his work on films such as Star Wars and Harry Potter. Yim attended the Juilliard School in New York City, where he studied piano performance and composition. During his time at Juilliard, Yim composed several pieces that were performed by the school's orchestra. His compositions received critical acclaim, and he was awarded several prizes for his work. After graduating from Juilliard, Yim began his career as a composer and pianist. He composed music for several films, including the Academy Award-winning movie, The Revenant. Yim's music was praised for its emotional depth and ability to capture the essence of the film's story. In addition to his work in film, Yim also composed several pieces for the concert stage. His compositions were performed by orchestras around the world, including the New York Philharmonic and the London Symphony Orchestra. Yim's music was known for its intricate harmonies and use of unconventional instruments, such as the theremin and the glass harmonica. One of Yim's most famous works is his Piano Concerto No. 1, which was premiered by the New York Philharmonic in 2010.
