Ensemble Dulce Melos is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 2005 by a group of musicians who shared a passion for early music. The ensemble is based in the United States and has gained a reputation for its innovative and engaging performances of music from the medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque periods. The founding members of Ensemble Dulce Melos were soprano Sarah Pillow, recorder player Tricia van Oers, and lutenist Christopher Morrongiello. They were soon joined by viola da gamba player Lisa Terry and harpsichordist Dongsok Shin. Together, these musicians formed a core group that has remained at the heart of the ensemble ever since. Ensemble Dulce Melos takes its name from the Latin phrase "dulce melos," which means "sweet melody." This name reflects the ensemble's commitment to performing music that is both beautiful and historically informed. The musicians of Ensemble Dulce Melos use period instruments and strive to recreate the sound and style of the music as it would have been heard in its original context. Over the years, Ensemble Dulce Melos has performed at many prestigious venues and festivals, both in the United States and abroad. Some of the highlights of the ensemble's performance history include appearances at the Boston Early Music Festival, the Berkeley Early Music Festival, and the Tage Alter Musik festival in Regensburg, Germany. Ensemble Dulce Melos has also been recognized for its outstanding performances with several awards and honors. In 2008, the ensemble was awarded the Early Music America/Naxos Recording Competition prize for its debut CD, "The Pleasures of the Royal Courts." This recording features music from the courts of Louis XIV and Charles II, and showcases the ensemble's virtuosic playing and sensitive interpretation. In addition to its live performances and recordings, Ensemble Dulce Melos is also committed to education and outreach. The ensemble has presented workshops and masterclasses for students and amateur musicians, and has collaborated with schools and community organizations to bring early music to new audiences. One of the hallmarks of Ensemble Dulce Melos's performances is the way in which the musicians bring the music to life with their expressive playing and engaging stage presence. Whether performing a lively dance or a poignant lament, the musicians of Ensemble Dulce Melos are always attuned to the emotional and dramatic aspects of the music. Another key aspect of the ensemble's approach is its commitment to historical accuracy. The musicians of Ensemble Dulce Melos are all experts in the performance practices of early music, and they use this knowledge to create performances that are both authentic and engaging. From the choice of instruments to the ornamentation and phrasing of the music, every aspect of the performance is carefully considered and executed with precision and artistry. Ensemble Dulce Melos's repertoire is wide-ranging and includes music from many different countries and time periods. Some of the ensemble's favorite composers include Claudio Monteverdi, Johann Sebastian Bach, and Henry Purcell, but they also perform lesser-known works by composers such as John Dowland, Heinrich Schütz, and Barbara Strozzi. In addition to its core members, Ensemble Dulce Melos often collaborates with other musicians and ensembles to create larger-scale performances.
