He was born in Grossschönau, Saxony, and was the son of a schoolteacher. His father recognized his musical talent at an early age and encouraged him to pursue music. Richter began his musical education at the age of six, studying piano and violin with his father. He later studied composition with Johann Gottfried Schicht and organ with Christian Heinrich Rinck. Richter's musical career began in 1826 when he became the organist at the church of St. Nicholas in Leipzig. He also worked as a music teacher and conductor in Leipzig. In 1833, he became the conductor of the Leipzig Singakademie, a position he held until 1861. During his tenure, he conducted many important works, including the first performance of Mendelssohn's Elijah in Leipzig in 1846. Richter was a prolific composer, writing over 200 works in a variety of genres, including symphonies, operas, oratorios, and chamber music. His music was influenced by the Romantic movement, and he was known for his use of rich harmonies and expressive melodies. One of Richter's most famous works is his opera Der Seekadett, which premiered in Leipzig in 1844. The opera tells the story of a young sailor who falls in love with a wealthy woman and must navigate the social and economic barriers that separate them. The opera was well-received and helped establish Richter's reputation as a composer. Richter also wrote several oratorios, including Das Morgenlicht, which premiered in Leipzig in 1847. The oratorio tells the story of creation and was praised for its use of choral writing and orchestration. In addition to his work as a composer and conductor, Richter was also a respected music educator. He taught at the Leipzig Conservatory from 1843 to 1861 and was known for his rigorous teaching methods. Many of his students went on to become successful composers and conductors in their own right. Richter's music fell out of favor in the late 19th century, and his works were largely forgotten. However, in recent years, there has been renewed interest in his music, and several of his works have been recorded and performed. Ernst Friedrich Richter was a talented composer and conductor who made significant contributions to the musical world during his lifetime. His music was characterized by its Romantic style and expressive melodies, and his work as a conductor helped establish Leipzig as a center of musical excellence. While his music may have been forgotten for a time, his legacy lives on through his compositions and the many musicians he taught and inspired.More....
