45th Parallel Universe is a classical music ensemble based in Portland, Oregon. The group was founded in 2009 by violinist Greg Ewer and cellist Justin Kagan, who sought to create a new kind of classical music experience that would be accessible and engaging for audiences of all ages and backgrounds. The ensemble's name is a reference to Portland's location on the 45th parallel, which is halfway between the equator and the North Pole. This location has long been associated with creativity and innovation, and the members of 45th Parallel Universe strive to embody these qualities in their music-making. The ensemble's core members include Greg Ewer (violin), Adam LaMotte (violin), Charles Noble (viola), Justin Kagan (cello), and Monica Ohuchi (piano). These musicians are all highly accomplished performers and educators, with extensive experience in both classical and contemporary music. One of the hallmarks of 45th Parallel Universe is its commitment to collaboration and experimentation. The ensemble frequently works with other artists and organizations to create unique and innovative performances that push the boundaries of classical music. For example, in 2017, the group collaborated with the Portland Art Museum to create a multimedia performance that combined live music with visual art and spoken word. Over the years, 45th Parallel Universe has performed at a wide range of venues and events, from intimate chamber music concerts to large-scale festivals and concerts. Some of the ensemble's most notable performances include a concert at the Oregon Bach Festival in 2015, a performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony with the Portland State University Choir in 2016, and a concert at the Oregon Symphony's SoundSights series in 2018. In addition to its live performances, 45th Parallel Universe has also released several critically acclaimed recordings. The ensemble's debut album, "Parallel Play," was released in 2012 and features works by contemporary composers such as John Adams and Philip Glass. The group's second album, "Into the Unknown," was released in 2016 and features works by composers from around the world, including China, Iran, and Argentina. 45th Parallel Universe has received numerous awards and accolades for its innovative approach to classical music. In 2014, the ensemble was named "Best Chamber Music Group" by the Oregonian, and in 2016, it was awarded a grant from the Oregon Arts Commission to support its work. The group has also been featured in numerous media outlets, including NPR's "All Things Considered" and the Wall Street Journal. Overall, 45th Parallel Universe is a dynamic and innovative ensemble that is redefining what classical music can be. With its commitment to collaboration, experimentation, and accessibility, the group is bringing classical music to new audiences and inspiring a new generation of musicians and music lovers.
