The quartet was founded in 1984 by four talented musicians who shared a passion for chamber music and a desire to create a unique sound that would set them apart from other ensembles. The founding members of the Cavani String Quartet were violinists Annie Fullard and Mari Sato, violist Kirsten Docter, and cellist Merry Peckham. All four musicians had impressive backgrounds and had studied at some of the most prestigious music schools in the world, including the Juilliard School, the Eastman School of Music, and the Cleveland Institute of Music. From the very beginning, the Cavani String Quartet was committed to exploring the full range of the chamber music repertoire, from the classics of Mozart and Beethoven to the contemporary works of living composers. They quickly gained a reputation for their innovative programming and their ability to bring new life to even the most familiar pieces. Over the years, the Cavani String Quartet has performed at some of the most prestigious venues in the world, including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Berlin Philharmonic. They have also collaborated with some of the most celebrated musicians of our time, including pianist Leon Fleisher, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, and violinist Joshua Bell. One of the highlights of the Cavani String Quartet's career was their performance at the White House in 1999, where they played for President Bill Clinton and First Lady Hillary Clinton. The quartet has also been featured on numerous radio and television programs, including NPR's "Performance Today" and PBS's "Live from Lincoln Center." In addition to their impressive performance schedule, the Cavani String Quartet has also been recognized with numerous awards and honors. They were the first quartet to win the prestigious Naumburg Chamber Music Award, and they have also been awarded the Guarneri String Quartet Award for Artistic Excellence and the Cleveland Arts Prize. Throughout their career, the Cavani String Quartet has remained committed to their mission of bringing the beauty and power of chamber music to audiences around the world. They have also been dedicated to mentoring the next generation of musicians, and they have served as faculty members at some of the most respected music schools in the country, including the Cleveland Institute of Music and the University of Southern California. Today, the Cavani String Quartet continues to inspire audiences with their exceptional performances and their unwavering commitment to the art of chamber music.
