Rob Buckland is a renowned classical saxophonist, composer, and educator. He was born on August 22, 1964, in Grimsby, England. Buckland grew up in a musical family, and his father was a jazz pianist. He started playing the saxophone at the age of 11 and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. Buckland studied at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree with honors. He then went on to study at the Paris Conservatoire with Daniel Deffayet, one of the most respected saxophonists in the world. Buckland also studied with John Harle, a renowned British saxophonist, and composer. In 1986, Buckland co-founded the Apollo Saxophone Quartet, which quickly gained a reputation as one of the leading saxophone ensembles in the world. The quartet has performed extensively throughout Europe, Asia, and North America, and has recorded numerous albums. Buckland has also performed as a soloist with many orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Buckland is also an accomplished composer, and his works have been performed by many leading ensembles, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, and the Apollo Saxophone Quartet. He has also written music for film, television, and theater. One of Buckland's most notable performances was at the 1992 Proms, where he performed the world premiere of John Adams' Saxophone Concerto with the BBC Symphony Orchestra. The performance was widely praised, and Buckland's virtuosic playing was particularly noted. Buckland has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 1990, he was awarded the prestigious Royal Overseas League Music Competition, and in 1991, he won the Yamaha Music Foundation of Europe Scholarship. He has also been awarded the Arts Council of England Composer's Award and the PRS Foundation for New Music Award. In addition to his performing and composing career, Buckland is also an experienced educator. He has taught at many leading music schools, including the Royal Northern College of Music, the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. He is currently a professor of saxophone at the Royal College of Music in London. Buckland is also a passionate advocate for the saxophone and has worked to promote the instrument's place in classical music. He has commissioned many new works for the saxophone and has collaborated with many leading composers to create new repertoire for the instrument.
