He was the son of a musician, Giovanni Battista Campioni, who was a violinist and composer. Carlo Antonio grew up in a musical family and received his early musical education from his father. At the age of 14, Carlo Antonio was sent to study music in Rome, where he studied under the famous composer and violinist, Francesco Geminiani. He quickly became a skilled violinist and composer, and his talent was recognized by many in the music world. In 1740, Carlo Antonio returned to Bologna and began working as a violinist and composer for the local church. He also began teaching music and became a respected music teacher in the city. In 1745, he was appointed as the maestro di cappella at the church of San Giovanni in Monte, a position he held for the rest of his life. As a composer, Carlo Antonio Campioni was known for his sacred music, including masses, motets, and oratorios. He also composed instrumental music, including sonatas and concertos. His music was characterized by its elegance, clarity, and simplicity, and he was known for his use of counterpoint and his ability to create beautiful melodies. One of his most famous works is his oratorio, "Il Martirio di Santa Caterina," which was first performed in Bologna in 1755. The oratorio tells the story of the martyrdom of Saint Catherine of Alexandria and features beautiful arias and choruses. Another notable work by Campioni is his "Concerto for Violin and Orchestra in D Major," which was composed in the 1750s.
