From a young age, Johan showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Johan's parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. He began taking piano lessons with his mother and quickly progressed to more advanced pieces. By the age of ten, Johan had already won several local piano competitions and was considered a prodigy. In 1986, Johan was accepted into the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, where he studied under the tutelage of renowned pianist and teacher, Jean-Claude Vanden Eynden. During his time at the conservatory, Johan honed his skills and developed a deep understanding of classical music. After graduating from the conservatory in 1994, Johan began performing in concerts across Europe. He quickly gained a reputation as a talented and passionate pianist, and his performances were praised for their technical precision and emotional depth. In 1998, Johan won the prestigious Queen Elisabeth Competition, which is considered one of the most prestigious piano competitions in the world.
