Dzintars Women's Choir is a classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences with their angelic voices for over 70 years. The choir was founded in 1947 in Riga, Latvia, by conductor Imants Kokars, who was a professor at the Latvian State Conservatory. The choir was named after the Latvian word for amber, which is a precious stone found in the Baltic Sea region. The choir started with just 12 members, but quickly grew in popularity and size. By the 1950s, the choir had over 50 members and was performing regularly throughout Latvia. In 1957, the choir won first prize at the Latvian Song Festival, which was a major milestone for the group. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, the choir continued to gain recognition both in Latvia and internationally. They performed in countries such as Germany, Sweden, and the United States, and won numerous awards at international choral competitions. In 1972, the choir won first prize at the International Choral Competition in Arezzo, Italy, which was a significant achievement for the group. In the 1980s, the choir faced some challenges due to political unrest in Latvia. However, they continued to perform and record music, and in 1988, they released their first album, "Dzintars." The album was a huge success and helped to bring the choir to a wider audience. In the 1990s, the choir underwent some changes in leadership and membership, but they continued to perform and record music. In 1997, they celebrated their 50th anniversary with a special concert in Riga, which was attended by over 5,000 people. In the 2000s, the choir continued to perform and record music, and they also started to collaborate with other artists and ensembles. In 2005, they performed with the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra in a concert that was broadcast on Latvian television. They also collaborated with the Latvian Radio Choir and the Latvian Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra on several recordings. In recent years, the choir has continued to perform and record music, and they have also started to focus on education and outreach. They have held workshops and masterclasses for young singers, and they have also started a program to support young composers. Throughout their history, Dzintars Women's Choir has won numerous awards and accolades. They have won first prize at international choral competitions in Italy, Spain, and Germany, and they have also been awarded the Latvian Grand Music Award, which is the highest honor in Latvian music. The choir's repertoire includes a wide range of music, from traditional Latvian folk songs to classical choral works. They are known for their beautiful harmonies and their ability to convey emotion through their singing. Dzintars Women's Choir has become a beloved institution in Latvia and a respected ensemble in the international choral community. Their dedication to excellence and their commitment to preserving and promoting Latvian music and culture have made them a true treasure of the classical music world.
