Daniele Lombardi is a renowned Italian composer and pianist who has made significant contributions to the world of contemporary classical music. Born on October 12, 1956, in Rome, Lombardi showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. He received his formal training in music at the Conservatory of Santa Cecilia in Rome, where he studied composition, piano, and conducting. Lombardi's early works were heavily influenced by the avant-garde movement of the 1960s and 1970s, particularly the works of John Cage and Karlheinz Stockhausen. He was also inspired by the minimalist music of Philip Glass and Steve Reich, as well as the experimental music of Luigi Nono and Luciano Berio. In the early 1980s, Lombardi began to gain recognition for his innovative compositions, which combined elements of minimalism, serialism, and electronic music. His works often featured unconventional instrumentation, such as prepared piano, percussion, and electronics, and explored themes of time, space, and perception. One of Lombardi's most notable works from this period is "Piano Spaces," a series of compositions for prepared piano that he began in 1982. The pieces in this series are characterized by their use of extended techniques, such as plucking and scraping the strings of the piano, and their exploration of the sonic possibilities of the instrument. "Piano Spaces" has been performed by numerous pianists around the world and has become a staple of the contemporary piano repertoire. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Lombardi began to incorporate more traditional elements into his compositions, such as tonality and melody. He also began to explore the possibilities of combining acoustic and electronic instruments, as well as incorporating elements of improvisation into his works. One of Lombardi's most significant works from this period is "The Persistence of Memory," a multimedia composition for piano, electronics, and video that he created in collaboration with video artist Fabrizio Plessi. The piece, which premiered in 1992, explores the theme of memory and features a video projection of Plessi's images of water and fire, which are synchronized with Lombardi's music. "The Persistence of Memory" has been performed at numerous festivals and venues around the world and has been praised for its innovative use of multimedia. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Lombardi continued to explore new directions in his music, incorporating elements of jazz, rock, and world music into his compositions. He also began to collaborate with other musicians and artists, including saxophonist Evan Parker, percussionist Andrea Centazzo, and visual artist Mimmo Paladino. One of Lombardi's most significant works from this period is "The Book of Flights," a cycle of compositions for piano, electronics, and percussion that he created in collaboration with Centazzo. The pieces in this cycle are characterized by their use of rhythmic patterns and improvisation, as well as their incorporation of elements of African and Middle Eastern music. "The Book of Flights" has been performed at numerous festivals and venues around the world and has been praised for its innovative fusion of different musical traditions. In addition to his work as a composer, Lombardi is also an accomplished pianist and has performed extensively as a soloist and chamber musician.
