Hulda Lashanska was a renowned classical music artist who was born on January 28, 1906, in Brest-Litovsk, which was then a part of the Russian Empire. She was born into a family of musicians, and her father was a cantor in a local synagogue. Lashanska showed an early interest in music and began singing in the synagogue choir at a young age. Lashanska's family moved to Warsaw when she was a child, and she continued her musical education there. She studied at the Warsaw Conservatory and later at the Berlin Hochschule für Musik. She also studied with the famous soprano, Lilli Lehmann, in Salzburg, Austria. Lashanska made her professional debut in 1926 at the Warsaw Opera House, where she sang the role of Rosina in Rossini's "The Barber of Seville." She quickly gained a reputation as a talented soprano and began performing in opera houses throughout Europe. In 1930, Lashanska made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City, where she sang the role of Gilda in Verdi's "Rigoletto." She became a regular performer at the Met and sang in many of the company's productions over the next decade. One of Lashanska's most famous performances was in the world premiere of Sergei Prokofiev's "War and Peace" at the Kirov Opera in Leningrad in 1946. She sang the role of Natasha Rostova and received critical acclaim for her performance. Lashanska also performed in many concerts and recitals throughout her career. She was known for her interpretations of the works of Mozart, Schubert, and Brahms, among others. She was particularly admired for her ability to convey emotion through her singing. Lashanska received many awards and honors throughout her career. In 1937, she was awarded the Order of Polonia Restituta by the Polish government for her contributions to the arts. She was also awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor by the Soviet government in 1946. Lashanska retired from performing in 1951 and moved to Israel, where she taught voice at the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance. She continued to be involved in the music world and served as a judge for many international singing competitions. Hulda Lashanska passed away on December 31, 1997, in Jerusalem, Israel. She was remembered as one of the greatest sopranos of her time and a pioneer for women in the music industry. Her legacy lives on through her recordings and the many singers she inspired.
