He was born in Hamburg, Germany, to a Jewish family, and showed an early aptitude for music. His father was a successful merchant who encouraged his son's musical interests, and Goldschmidt began studying piano and composition at a young age. Goldschmidt's musical education continued in earnest when he moved to Leipzig in 1847 to study at the Leipzig Conservatory. There, he studied under some of the most prominent composers of the time, including Felix Mendelssohn and Robert Schumann. He also met his future wife, the famous soprano Jenny Lind, while studying in Leipzig. After completing his studies, Goldschmidt began his career as a conductor and pianist. He worked in various cities throughout Germany, including Berlin and Cologne, and also spent time in England, where he conducted the Philharmonic Society in London. In 1856, he married Jenny Lind, and the couple settled in England. Goldschmidt continued to work as a conductor and pianist throughout his career, but he also began to focus more on composition. He wrote a number of works for orchestra, including his Symphony in A minor, which was premiered in 1866. He also wrote chamber music, including a string quartet and a piano trio, as well as vocal music, including songs and choral works. One of Goldschmidt's most famous works is his oratorio Ruth, which he composed in 1883. The work tells the story of the biblical character Ruth, and features a large chorus and orchestra. It was premiered in London in 1883, and was well-received by audiences and critics alike. In addition to his work as a composer, Goldschmidt was also a respected music educator. He taught at the Royal Academy of Music in London, and also founded the Bach Choir in 1875. The choir was dedicated to performing the works of Johann Sebastian Bach, and it quickly became one of the most respected choral ensembles in England. Goldschmidt's career was marked by a number of highlights, including his work as a conductor, his compositions, and his contributions to music education. He was widely respected by his peers, and his music continues to be performed and recorded today. Despite his many accomplishments, Goldschmidt's life was not without its challenges. As a Jew living in Germany and later in England, he faced discrimination and prejudice throughout his life. He also struggled with health issues, including a heart condition that eventually led to his death in 1907. Despite these challenges, Goldschmidt remained dedicated to his music and his art throughout his life. He was a true pioneer in the world of classical music, and his contributions to the field continue to be celebrated today.More....
