Robert Shaw was an American conductor and choral music artist who was born on April 30, 1916, in Red Bluff, California. He was the son of a minister and grew up in a musical family. His mother was a pianist, and his father was a singer and choir director. Shaw began singing in his father's church choir at a young age and showed a natural talent for music. Shaw attended Pomona College in California, where he studied music and sang in the college choir. After college, he moved to New York City to pursue a career in music. He worked as a freelance choral singer and conductor, performing with various groups and ensembles. In 1941, Shaw was drafted into the United States Army and served as a sergeant in the Army Air Corps during World War II. After the war, he returned to New York City and continued his career in music. Shaw's big break came in 1948 when he was appointed the conductor of the Collegiate Chorale, a New York-based choral group. Under his leadership, the Collegiate Chorale became one of the most respected choral groups in the country. Shaw's innovative approach to choral music, which emphasized clarity of diction and precision of rhythm, was widely praised. In 1953, Shaw was appointed the conductor of the Robert Shaw Chorale, a professional choral group that he founded. The Robert Shaw Chorale quickly gained a reputation for excellence, and Shaw became one of the most sought-after conductors in the country. Shaw's career reached new heights in the 1960s when he was appointed the conductor of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. Under his leadership, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra became one of the most respected orchestras in the country. Shaw's innovative approach to orchestral music, which emphasized clarity of sound and precision of rhythm, was widely praised. Shaw's most famous performance was his 1965 recording of Handel's Messiah with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Chorus. The recording, which was released on the RCA Victor label, became one of the best-selling classical recordings of all time. It won a Grammy Award for Best Choral Performance in 1967. Shaw continued to conduct the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra until 1988, when he retired due to health reasons. He remained active in the music world, however, and continued to conduct choral groups and orchestras until his death in 1999. Throughout his career, Shaw received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to the world of music. He won 14 Grammy Awards, including two for Best Classical Album and four for Best Choral Performance. He was also awarded the National Medal of Arts in 1991, the highest honor given to artists by the United States government. Shaw's legacy as a conductor and choral music artist is still felt today. His innovative approach to music, which emphasized clarity of sound and precision of rhythm, has influenced generations of musicians. His recordings of Handel's Messiah and other choral works are still considered some of the best ever made. And his commitment to excellence in music has inspired countless musicians to strive for greatness.
