Concerto Romano is a classical music ensemble that was founded in Rome, Italy in 2002. The ensemble is known for its performances of Baroque and Classical music, and has gained a reputation for its innovative interpretations of these genres. The founding members of Concerto Romano were a group of musicians who shared a passion for early music. They were led by conductor and harpsichordist Alessandro Quarta, who had previously worked with several other early music ensembles in Italy and abroad. Quarta was joined by violinists Stefano Montanari and Marco Bianchi, cellist Francesco Galligioni, and bassoonist Paolo Carlini, among others. From the beginning, Concerto Romano aimed to bring a fresh perspective to the performance of Baroque and Classical music. The ensemble's members were all highly trained musicians with a deep understanding of historical performance practices, but they also sought to incorporate elements of improvisation and experimentation into their performances. This approach was inspired by the work of early music pioneers such as Nikolaus Harnoncourt and Gustav Leonhardt, who had challenged traditional approaches to Baroque music in the 1960s and 70s. Concerto Romano quickly gained a following in Rome and throughout Italy, and began to perform regularly at festivals and concert series. The ensemble's first major international performance came in 2004, when they were invited to perform at the prestigious Festival de Musique Baroque de Pontoise in France. This was followed by appearances at other major European festivals, including the Festival Oude Muziek in Utrecht, the Festival de Sablé in France, and the Festival de Musique Ancienne de Callas in Switzerland. One of Concerto Romano's most notable achievements came in 2006, when they were awarded the prestigious Premio Abbiati by the Italian music critics' association. This award is considered one of the highest honors in the Italian classical music world, and is given annually to the best performers and productions in various categories. Concerto Romano was recognized for their innovative approach to Baroque music, and for their ability to bring new life to familiar works. In the years that followed, Concerto Romano continued to perform extensively throughout Europe and beyond. They collaborated with a wide range of musicians and ensembles, including the vocal ensemble La Venexiana, the soprano Roberta Invernizzi, and the violinist Giuliano Carmignola. They also recorded several albums, including a critically acclaimed recording of Vivaldi's Four Seasons with Carmignola. One of Concerto Romano's most memorable performances came in 2010, when they were invited to perform at the Royal Albert Hall in London as part of the BBC Proms. This was a major milestone for the ensemble, as the Proms is one of the most prestigious classical music festivals in the world. Concerto Romano performed a program of Baroque music by Handel, Vivaldi, and Corelli, and received a standing ovation from the audience. In recent years, Concerto Romano has continued to evolve and expand its repertoire. They have explored the music of lesser-known composers such as Giovanni Benedetto Platti and Johann Friedrich Fasch, and have also delved into the Classical period with works by Mozart and Haydn. The ensemble has also continued to experiment with new approaches to performance, incorporating elements of theater and dance into their concerts.More....
