He was the youngest of three children born to a family of musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. From a young age, Saunders was exposed to music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Saunders showed a natural talent for music, and his parents recognized his potential early on. They enrolled him in music lessons, and he began studying under some of the best music teachers in Vienna. Saunders was a quick learner and showed a great interest in classical music. He spent hours practicing the piano and listening to recordings of famous composers. At the age of 12, Saunders composed his first piece of music, a short piano sonata. His parents were impressed by his talent and encouraged him to continue composing. Saunders continued to study music throughout his teenage years and attended the Vienna Conservatory of Music, where he studied composition under some of the most renowned composers of the time. Saunders' early compositions were heavily influenced by the classical music of the 18th and 19th centuries. He was particularly drawn to the works of Mozart, Beethoven, and Bach. Saunders' compositions were characterized by their intricate melodies, complex harmonies, and use of counterpoint. In 1970, Saunders graduated from the Vienna Conservatory of Music with a degree in composition. He began working as a freelance composer, writing music for films, television, and the theater. Saunders' breakthrough came in 1975 when he composed his first symphony. The piece was well-received by critics and audiences alike and established Saunders as a major force in the world of classical music.
