Baudouin De Jaer is a Belgian composer and violinist who was born on August 28, 1963, in Brussels, Belgium. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a jazz pianist and his mother a classical pianist. De Jaer started playing the violin at the age of six and went on to study at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels. De Jaer's early compositions were influenced by his interest in jazz and improvisation. However, he soon became interested in the music of other cultures, particularly that of Asia. In 1993, he traveled to North Korea to study traditional Korean music and became the first Westerner to be allowed to study at the Pyongyang Conservatory of Music. De Jaer's experiences in North Korea had a profound impact on his music. He began to incorporate elements of Korean music into his compositions, creating a unique blend of Western classical music and traditional Korean music. His first major work in this style was "Korean Dreams," a suite for violin and orchestra that was premiered in 1996. Since then, De Jaer has continued to explore the music of other cultures, including that of China, Japan, and India. He has also collaborated with musicians from these countries, incorporating their instruments and techniques into his compositions. One of De Jaer's most notable works is "Aide-Mémoire," a piece for solo violin that was premiered in 2005. The piece is based on a series of photographs that De Jaer took while traveling in North Korea. Each movement of the piece is inspired by a different photograph, and the music reflects the emotions and experiences captured in the images. Another notable work is "Piano Music for Children," a collection of short pieces that De Jaer composed for his daughter. The pieces are designed to be accessible to young children and introduce them to the world of classical music. In addition to his work as a composer, De Jaer is also an accomplished violinist. He has performed with orchestras around the world and has recorded several albums of his own compositions. De Jaer's music is characterized by its unique blend of Western classical music and traditional music from other cultures. His compositions are often inspired by his travels and experiences in other countries, and he is known for his ability to incorporate the sounds and techniques of these cultures into his music. Overall, Baudouin De Jaer is a talented and innovative composer who has made significant contributions to the world of classical music. His unique style and willingness to explore the music of other cultures have earned him a place among the most respected composers of his generation.
