The Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra (DPO) is a classical music ensemble based in Dayton, Ohio. Founded in 1930, the DPO has become one of the most respected and beloved orchestras in the Midwest, known for its high-quality performances and commitment to community engagement. The DPO was founded by a group of local musicians who wanted to create a professional orchestra in Dayton. The group was led by Paul Katz, a violinist who had previously played with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. Katz and his colleagues worked tirelessly to raise funds and recruit musicians, and in 1930, the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra gave its first concert. Over the years, the DPO has had many talented musicians and conductors, but some of the most notable include conductor Thomas Schippers, who led the orchestra from 1959 to 1962, and conductor Neal Gittleman, who has been the DPO's music director since 1995. Under Gittleman's leadership, the DPO has continued to grow and thrive, attracting top talent and expanding its repertoire. One of the DPO's most notable performances was its 50th anniversary concert in 1980, which featured a performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. The concert was a huge success, and it helped to cement the DPO's reputation as one of the premier orchestras in the Midwest. In addition to its regular concert series, the DPO is also known for its community engagement programs. The orchestra regularly performs at local schools and community centers, and it has also partnered with other local organizations to bring music to underserved communities. In 2012, the orchestra was named one of the top five orchestras in the country by the League of American Orchestras, and it has also received numerous awards from the Ohio Arts Council and other organizations.
