He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a family that was passionate about music. From a young age, Cariven showed a natural talent for music and began studying the piano and violin. He later went on to study at the Marseille Conservatory, where he excelled in his studies and won several awards. After completing his studies, Cariven began his career as a conductor, working with various orchestras in France and Europe. He quickly gained a reputation for his exceptional musical talent and was soon invited to conduct some of the world's most prestigious orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic, and the London Symphony Orchestra. One of Cariven's most significant achievements was his appointment as the principal conductor of the Orchestre National de France in 1951. He held this position for over a decade and was instrumental in establishing the orchestra as one of the finest in the world. During his tenure, Cariven conducted numerous concerts and recordings, many of which received critical acclaim. Cariven was also a prolific composer and wrote several works for orchestra, including symphonies, concertos, and chamber music.
