Artist Info

Howard Davis was a renowned classical music artist who made a significant contribution to the world of music. He was born on May 31, 1945, in London, England, to a family of musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. From a young age, Davis was exposed to music and showed a keen interest in the violin. Davis began his formal training in music at the age of six when he started taking violin lessons. He showed exceptional talent and quickly progressed through the ranks. By the age of 12, he had already won several local competitions and was considered a prodigy. In 1958, Davis was accepted into the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he continued his studies under the tutelage of renowned violinists such as Frederick Grinke and Max Rostal. He graduated with honors in 1963 and went on to pursue a career in music. Davis made his debut as a soloist in 1964, performing with the London Symphony Orchestra. He received critical acclaim for his performance, and his career took off from there. Over the next few years, he performed with several major orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Vienna Philharmonic. In 1970, Davis formed the Amadeus Quartet, which quickly became one of the most celebrated string quartets in the world. The quartet consisted of Davis on the first violin, Siegmund Nissel on the second violin, Peter Schidlof on the viola, and Martin Lovett on the cello. They performed together for over 40 years, until Schidlof's death in 1987. The Amadeus Quartet was known for their impeccable technique, musicality, and unity of sound. They performed a wide range of repertoire, from classical to contemporary, and were particularly renowned for their interpretations of the works of Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert. They recorded extensively, and their recordings are still considered some of the best in the classical music canon. In addition to his work with the Amadeus Quartet, Davis also had a successful solo career. He performed as a soloist with many major orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. He also recorded several solo albums, including a highly acclaimed recording of Bach's Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin. Throughout his career, Davis received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to music. In 1977, he was awarded the Order of Merit by the Queen of England, one of the highest honors that can be bestowed upon a British citizen. He was also awarded the Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1985 and the Knight Bachelor in 1995. Davis continued to perform and record until his death in 1999 at the age of 54. His legacy lives on through his recordings and the many musicians he inspired throughout his career. He will always be remembered as one of the greatest violinists of his generation and a true ambassador for classical music.
