Role:ComposerBonnie Whiting is a contemporary classical music composer and percussionist who has made a significant impact on the music world through her innovative compositions and performances. Born in 1977 in the United States, Whiting grew up in a musical family and began playing the piano at a young age. She later discovered her passion for percussion and went on to study at the Eastman School of Music, where she earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Percussion Performance. After completing her undergraduate studies, Whiting continued her education at the University of California, San Diego, where she earned a Master of Arts degree in Music Composition. During this time, she studied with renowned composers such as Roger Reynolds and Chaya Czernowin, who helped shape her unique approach to composition. Whiting's compositions are known for their experimental and unconventional nature, often incorporating elements of improvisation, extended techniques, and multimedia. Her works have been performed by numerous ensembles and soloists, including the Seattle Symphony, the International Contemporary Ensemble, and the JACK Quartet. One of Whiting's most notable works is her percussion solo "Liquid Study," which was commissioned by the Seattle Symphony and premiered in 2016. The piece features a variety of percussion instruments, including marimba, vibraphone, and cymbals, and explores the concept of fluidity through its use of flowing rhythms and melodic lines. Another notable work by Whiting is "The Anarchist's Guide to the Symphony," a multimedia piece that combines live performance with video and audio recordings. The piece was inspired by the writings of anarchist Emma Goldman and explores themes of rebellion and social change. In addition to her work as a composer, Whiting is also an accomplished percussionist and has performed with a variety of ensembles and orchestras. She is currently the Head of Percussion Studies at the University of Washington School of Music, where she teaches and mentors the next generation of musicians. Overall, Bonnie Whiting's contributions to the world of classical music have been significant and far-reaching. Her innovative compositions and performances have challenged traditional notions of what classical music can be, and her work continues to inspire and influence musicians and audiences around the world.More....
