Alberto Favero was born on December 23, 1948, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a pianist and his mother a singer. From a young age, Favero showed a natural talent for music and began studying piano and composition at the National Conservatory of Music in Buenos Aires. Favero's early compositions were heavily influenced by the music of his native Argentina, particularly the tango. He began to experiment with incorporating elements of jazz and rock into his compositions, creating a unique sound that would become his trademark. In 1971, Favero composed his first major work, the opera "El Cimarrón," which tells the story of a slave who escapes from his plantation and becomes a guerrilla fighter. The opera was a critical and commercial success, and it established Favero as one of the most promising young composers in Argentina. Over the next few years, Favero continued to compose operas, including "El Juez" and "El Canto del Viento," which were also well-received. He also began to work as a conductor, leading performances of his own works as well as those of other composers. In the 1980s, Favero began to focus more on composing for film and television. He wrote the scores for several Argentine films, including "La Historia Oficial," which won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1986. He also composed music for television shows and commercials, further expanding his reach and influence. Despite his success in the world of film and television, Favero never lost his love for classical music. He continued to compose operas, symphonies, and chamber music throughout his career, always striving to push the boundaries of what was possible in classical music. One of Favero's most notable works is his "Concerto for Piano and Orchestra," which was premiered in 1992. The concerto is a virtuosic showcase for the soloist, with complex rhythms and harmonies that reflect Favero's eclectic musical influences. The piece has been performed by some of the world's leading pianists, including Martha Argerich and Daniel Barenboim. Another highlight of Favero's career is his "Tango Opera," which premiered in 2000. The opera tells the story of a group of tango musicians in Buenos Aires, and features some of Favero's most memorable and evocative music. The opera has been performed around the world, and has helped to cement Favero's reputation as one of the most important composers of tango music in the modern era. Throughout his career, Favero remained committed to promoting classical music in Argentina and beyond. He founded several music festivals and organizations, including the Buenos Aires International Music Festival and the Argentine Association of Composers. He also taught composition at the National University of La Plata, inspiring a new generation of young composers to follow in his footsteps. Sadly, Alberto Favero passed away on January 17, 2021, at the age of 72. His legacy as a composer, conductor, and educator lives on, however, through his many works and the countless musicians he inspired and influenced over the course of his career.
