His father, Archie Raitt, was a successful singer and actor, and his mother, Stella Lorraine, was a homemaker. Raitt grew up in Santa Ana and attended Fullerton Junior College, where he studied music and drama. He then transferred to Stanford University, where he continued his studies in music and theater. After graduating from Stanford, Raitt moved to New York City to pursue a career in musical theater. Raitt made his Broadway debut in 1945 in the musical "Carousel," which was a huge success. He played the lead role of Billy Bigelow and received critical acclaim for his performance. The show ran for 890 performances and won numerous awards, including the Tony Award for Best Musical.
