He was born on February 15, 1738, in Oxford, England. His father, William Hayes, was a well-known composer and organist, and his mother, Elizabeth, was a singer. Phillip was the youngest of their six children. Phillip showed an early interest in music and began studying under his father's tutelage at a young age. He quickly became proficient in playing the organ and the harpsichord. By the age of 12, he was already composing his own music. In 1755, Phillip enrolled at the University of Oxford, where he studied music and theology. He continued to compose music during his time at the university and became known for his choral works. In 1758, he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree and was appointed as the organist at Magdalen College. Over the next few years, Phillip continued to compose music and gained a reputation as a talented composer. In 1762, he was appointed as the organist at St. Mary's Church in Oxford. He held this position for the rest of his life and became known for his organ music. Phillip's most famous work is his oratorio, "The Fall of Jericho," which was first performed in 1773. The oratorio tells the story of the Israelites' conquest of Jericho and features a chorus, soloists, and an orchestra. The work was well-received and became one of the most popular oratorios of the time. In addition to his oratorio, Phillip composed a number of other works, including cantatas, anthems, and hymns. His music was known for its intricate harmonies and use of counterpoint. He was also known for his skill in improvisation and was often called upon to improvise during church services. Phillip was a devout Christian and his faith was reflected in his music. Many of his works were written for use in church services and were intended to inspire worship and devotion. He was also known for his philanthropy and often donated his time and money to charitable causes. Phillip Hayes died on March 2, 1797, at the age of 59. He was buried in St. Mary's Churchyard in Oxford. His legacy lives on through his music, which continues to be performed and enjoyed by classical music enthusiasts around the world.More....
