Jay Carter is a renowned countertenor in the world of classical music. Born on August 12, 1975, in New York City, Jay grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a jazz pianist, and his mother was a classical singer. Jay's parents recognized his musical talent at an early age and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. Jay began his formal music education at the age of six when he started taking piano lessons. He later learned to play the violin and the cello. However, it was his voice that stood out the most. Jay's parents enrolled him in a children's choir, where he discovered his love for singing. He continued to sing in choirs throughout his childhood and teenage years. After completing high school, Jay attended the Juilliard School in New York City, where he studied voice. He graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree in 1997. Jay then went on to pursue a Master of Music degree at the Yale School of Music, which he completed in 1999. Jay's career as a professional singer began in 2000 when he joined the New York-based ensemble, TENET. He quickly gained recognition for his exceptional vocal range and his ability to sing in the countertenor range. Jay's unique voice caught the attention of many music directors, and he was soon invited to perform with some of the most prestigious orchestras and opera companies in the world. One of Jay's most notable performances was in 2003 when he sang the role of Oberon in Benjamin Britten's opera, A Midsummer Night's Dream, at the Glyndebourne Festival Opera in England. The performance was widely praised by critics, who described Jay's voice as "ethereal" and "otherworldly." The following year, Jay made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City, where he sang the role of Tolomeo in Handel's opera, Giulio Cesare. Jay's career continued to flourish, and he became a sought-after performer in the world of classical music. He has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. Jay has also collaborated with some of the most renowned conductors, including Sir Simon Rattle, Sir John Eliot Gardiner, and Daniel Barenboim. In addition to his performances on stage, Jay has also recorded several albums. His debut album, "A Countertenor Christmas," was released in 2005 and features traditional Christmas carols and hymns. Jay's second album, "Handel: Arie per la Cuzzoni," was released in 2008 and features arias written by Handel for the Italian soprano, Francesca Cuzzoni. Jay's exceptional talent has been recognized with numerous awards and honors. In 2004, he was awarded the Richard Tucker Award, which is given annually to an American singer who is on the verge of a major international career. Jay was also awarded the Grammy Award for Best Opera Recording in 2011 for his performance in John Adams' opera, Nixon in China. Jay continues to perform and record music, and his career shows no signs of slowing down. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest countertenors of his generation and has inspired many young singers to pursue a career in classical music. Jay's dedication to his craft and his exceptional talent have made him a true icon in the world of classical music.More....
