Andrew Bain is a renowned classical music artist who has made a name for himself as a world-class French horn player. Born in 1974 in Manchester, England, Bain grew up in a family of musicians and was exposed to classical music from a young age. His father was a professional trumpet player, and his mother was a music teacher, so it was only natural that he would follow in their footsteps. Bain began playing the French horn at the age of 11 and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. He studied at the Chetham's School of Music in Manchester and later at the Royal Northern College of Music, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree. He then went on to study at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, where he received a Postgraduate Diploma in Orchestral Studies. After completing his studies, Bain began his professional career as a French horn player. He played with several orchestras in the UK, including the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. In 2003, he was appointed principal horn of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, a position he held for six years. In 2009, Bain moved to the United States to take up a position as principal horn of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. He has been a member of the orchestra ever since and has played on many of their recordings and tours. He has also performed as a soloist with the orchestra, playing works by composers such as Richard Strauss and Benjamin Britten. Bain has also been active as a chamber musician and has performed with many of the world's leading ensembles. He is a member of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Brass Quintet and has also played with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, the London Sinfonietta, and the Nash Ensemble. In addition to his performing career, Bain is also a respected teacher and has taught at several institutions, including the Royal Northern College of Music, the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and the Colburn School in Los Angeles. He is currently a professor of French horn at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. Bain has received many awards and accolades throughout his career. In 2001, he won the Philip Jones Memorial Prize for Brass at the Royal Overseas League Competition. He was also a finalist in the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition in 1992. In 2011, he was awarded the International Horn Society's Punto Award for his contributions to the horn world. One of the highlights of Bain's career was his performance of Richard Strauss's Horn Concerto No. 1 with the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 2014. The performance was widely praised by critics, with the Los Angeles Times calling it "a stunning display of virtuosity and musicality." Bain's performance was also featured on the orchestra's recording of the work, which was released in 2015. Another notable performance by Bain was his solo recital at the Wigmore Hall in London in 2016. The recital featured works by composers such as Schumann, Brahms, and Ligeti, and was praised by critics for its "impeccable technique and musical sensitivity." Bain is also an advocate for new music and has premiered many works by contemporary composers. He has worked closely with composers such as John Adams, Magnus Lindberg, and Esa-Pekka Salonen, and has premiered works by these composers with the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
