His parents were both musicians, and they encouraged him to pursue music from a young age. Erich showed a natural talent for music, and he began playing the piano at the age of five. Erich's parents recognized his potential and enrolled him in the Berlin Conservatory of Music when he was just eight years old. He studied under some of the most prominent music teachers of the time, including Wilhelm Kempff and Edwin Fischer.
