Hans-Peter Linde was a renowned classical music artist who made significant contributions to the world of music as a flutist, conductor, and musicologist. Born on November 24, 1937, in Zurich, Switzerland, Linde showed an early interest in music and began playing the flute at the age of 12. He studied music at the Zurich Conservatory and later at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Basel, where he received his diploma in 1961. Linde's career as a flutist began in the early 1960s when he joined the Collegium Musicum Zurich, a chamber orchestra founded by Paul Sacher. He quickly gained recognition for his virtuosic playing and became a sought-after soloist, performing with orchestras and ensembles throughout Europe and the United States. In addition to his work as a performer, Linde was also a respected musicologist and scholar, specializing in the music of the Baroque era. One of the highlights of Linde's career as a flutist was his performance of Johann Sebastian Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 with the English Chamber Orchestra in 1969. The performance was widely praised for its clarity, precision, and musicality, and helped establish Linde as one of the leading interpreters of Bach's music. He went on to record several of Bach's works, including the complete sonatas for flute and harpsichord with harpsichordist Gustav Leonhardt. In addition to his work as a flutist, Linde was also an accomplished conductor. He founded the Linde Consort in 1971, an ensemble dedicated to the performance of Baroque music on period instruments. With the Linde Consort, he recorded several albums of music by Bach, Handel, and Vivaldi, among others. He also conducted orchestras and ensembles throughout Europe and the United States, including the English Chamber Orchestra, the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, and the Zurich Chamber Orchestra. Linde's contributions to the world of music were recognized with several awards and honors throughout his career. In 1973, he was awarded the Prix de Rome by the Swiss government, and in 1980 he received the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. He was also a member of the Royal Academy of Music in London and the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. Despite his many accomplishments, Linde remained humble and dedicated to his craft throughout his life. He continued to perform and record music until his death on December 27, 2019, at the age of 82. His legacy as a flutist, conductor, and musicologist lives on through his recordings and the many musicians he inspired and mentored throughout his career.
