Ensemble Fontegara is a classical music group that specializes in performing early music from the Renaissance and Baroque periods. The group was founded in 1998 by a group of musicians who shared a passion for historical performance practices and the music of the past. The founding members of Ensemble Fontegara were recorder player Pedro Memelsdorff, harpsichordist Andrea Marcon, and viola da gamba player Vittorio Ghielmi. The group took its name from the Fontegara treatise, a 16th-century book on recorder playing by Sylvestro Ganassi. From the beginning, Ensemble Fontegara was committed to performing music from the Renaissance and Baroque periods on period instruments and in historically informed performance practices. The group's repertoire includes works by composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach, George Frideric Handel, Claudio Monteverdi, and Antonio Vivaldi. One of the highlights of Ensemble Fontegara's early career was their performance at the Festival Oude Muziek in Utrecht, Netherlands in 1999. The festival is one of the most prestigious early music festivals in the world, and Ensemble Fontegara's performance was well-received by both audiences and critics. In 2001, Ensemble Fontegara released their debut album, "La Fontegara," which featured music by Giovanni Bassano, a 16th-century Italian composer and musician. The album was praised for its virtuosic performances and historically informed interpretations. Over the years, Ensemble Fontegara has performed at many of the world's most prestigious early music festivals, including the Boston Early Music Festival, the Festival de Musique Baroque de Lamèque in Canada, and the Tage Alter Musik Regensburg in Germany. The group has also collaborated with many renowned musicians, including soprano Emma Kirkby and countertenor Andreas Scholl. In 2006, Ensemble Fontegara was awarded the prestigious Diapason d'Or award for their album "Vivaldi: Concerti per flauto e flautino." The award is given by the French music magazine Diapason to recognize outstanding recordings in the classical music genre. In addition to their performances and recordings, Ensemble Fontegara is also committed to education and outreach. The group has conducted masterclasses and workshops for students and young musicians around the world, and they have also worked with organizations such as the Juilliard School and the Royal Conservatory of The Hague. Ensemble Fontegara continues to be one of the most respected and admired early music groups in the world. Their commitment to historical performance practices and their virtuosic performances have earned them a devoted following and critical acclaim.
