Helen Adu, better known by her stage name Sade, is a British-Nigerian singer, songwriter, and composer. Born on January 16, 1959, in Ibadan, Nigeria, Sade grew up in London, England, where she developed a passion for music at a young age. Her parents were both Nigerian, and her father was a professor of economics. Sade's mother was a nurse, and she encouraged her daughter's interest in music by playing jazz and soul records around the house. Sade attended Clacton County High School in Essex, where she formed her first band, Pride, with her schoolmates. After finishing school, Sade studied fashion design at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London. However, she soon realized that her true passion was music, and she left college to pursue a career in the music industry. In 1982, Sade formed the band Sade with three other musicians: Stuart Matthewman, Andrew Hale, and Paul Denman. The band's name was a combination of Sade's first name and the last names of the other members. Sade was the lead vocalist, while Matthewman played guitar and saxophone, Hale played keyboards, and Denman played bass. Sade's music was a unique blend of jazz, soul, and pop, with a distinctive sound that was both smooth and sophisticated. The band's debut album, Diamond Life, was released in 1984 and became an instant success. The album featured the hit singles "Smooth Operator" and "Your Love Is King," which helped to establish Sade as a major force in the music industry. Over the next few years, Sade released several more albums, including Promise (1985), Stronger Than Pride (1988), and Love Deluxe (1992). The band's music continued to be popular with audiences around the world, and they won several awards, including four Grammy Awards. In addition to her work with Sade, Helen Adu has also composed music for several films, including Absolute Beginners (1986) and Philadelphia (1993). She has also collaborated with other musicians, including Maxwell, Jay-Z, and Beyoncé. Stuart Matthewman was born on August 18, 1960, in Hull, England. He began playing the saxophone at a young age and later learned to play the guitar. Matthewman met Sade while they were both studying at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London. He joined Sade's band as a guitarist and saxophonist and also contributed to the band's songwriting. In addition to his work with Sade, Matthewman has also worked as a composer and producer. He has composed music for several films, including Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me (1992) and The World Is Not Enough (1999). He has also produced albums for other musicians, including Maxwell and Sweetback. Andrew Hale was born on August 14, 1961, in London, England. He began playing the piano at a young age and later learned to play the synthesizer. Hale met Sade and Matthewman while they were all studying at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London. He joined Sade's band as a keyboardist and also contributed to the band's songwriting. In addition to his work with Sade, Hale has also worked as a composer and producer. He has composed music for several films, including The Thomas Crown Affair (1999) and The Interpreter (2005). He has also produced albums for other musicians, including Sweetback and Maxwell. Paul Denman was born on May 29, 1957, in Hemel Hempstead, England. He began playing the bass guitar at a young age and later joined several local bands.
