Moisés Moleiro was a Venezuelan composer and pianist who was born on January 28, 1904, in San Fernando de Apure, Venezuela. He was the son of a Spanish father and a Venezuelan mother. Moleiro's father was a musician who played the guitar and the mandolin, and he introduced his son to music at a young age. Moleiro showed a natural talent for music and began playing the piano when he was just five years old. Moleiro's family moved to Caracas when he was a child, and he continued his musical education there. He studied piano with Vicente Emilio Sojo, a prominent Venezuelan composer and music educator. Sojo recognized Moleiro's talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. Moleiro also studied harmony and composition with Sojo and other teachers. Moleiro began performing as a pianist in public when he was a teenager. He played in concerts and recitals in Caracas and other cities in Venezuela. He also played in dance bands and accompanied singers. Moleiro's performances were well-received, and he became known for his virtuosity and his ability to play a wide range of musical styles. Moleiro began composing music when he was in his twenties. His early works were influenced by Venezuelan folk music and European classical music. He wrote piano pieces, songs, and chamber music. Moleiro's music was characterized by its lyricism, its rhythmic vitality, and its use of Venezuelan rhythms and melodies. Moleiro's most famous work is his Suite Venezolana, which he composed in 1938. The Suite is a collection of six pieces for piano that are based on Venezuelan folk music. The pieces are titled "Joropo," "Vals," "Contradanza," "Pasaje," "Gavota," and "Danza Negra." The Suite is considered a masterpiece of Venezuelan music and has become a staple of the piano repertoire in Venezuela and other countries. Moleiro's other notable works include his Sonata for Piano, his String Quartet, and his Three Pieces for Flute and Piano. He also wrote many songs, including "Luna de Margarita," which has become a popular Venezuelan folk song. Moleiro continued to perform and compose music throughout his life. He was a respected music educator and taught piano and composition at the Conservatorio Nacional de Música in Caracas. He also served as the director of the conservatory for a time. Moleiro died on June 19, 1979, in Caracas, Venezuela. He is remembered as one of the most important composers in Venezuelan music history.
