Role:ConductorStuart Gerber is a renowned percussionist and contemporary music specialist who has made a significant impact on the classical music scene. Born in 1973 in New York City, Gerber grew up in a family of musicians and was exposed to music from an early age. His father was a jazz pianist, and his mother was a classical pianist, which gave him a unique perspective on music. Gerber began his musical journey by playing the piano, but he soon discovered his passion for percussion. He started playing the drums in his school band and quickly became interested in exploring different percussion instruments. He went on to study percussion at the Manhattan School of Music, where he received his Bachelor of Music degree. After completing his undergraduate studies, Gerber continued his education at the University of California, San Diego, where he earned his Master of Fine Arts degree in percussion performance. During his time at UCSD, Gerber had the opportunity to work with some of the most prominent contemporary composers of the time, including Brian Ferneyhough, Roger Reynolds, and Chaya Czernowin. Gerber's career as a percussionist took off after he completed his studies. He has performed with some of the most prestigious orchestras and ensembles in the world, including the New York Philharmonic, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the London Symphony Orchestra. He has also collaborated with many contemporary composers, including John Luther Adams, Steve Reich, and David Lang. One of Gerber's most significant achievements was his performance of John Luther Adams' "Inuksuit" in 2013. The piece is a massive outdoor percussion work that requires dozens of performers and hundreds of instruments. Gerber organized and led the performance, which took place in Atlanta's Piedmont Park and involved over 80 percussionists. The performance was a huge success and received critical acclaim. Gerber has also been recognized for his contributions to the contemporary music scene. In 2014, he was awarded the prestigious Alpert Award in the Arts for his work as a percussionist and his dedication to contemporary music. The award is given annually to five artists in different disciplines who have made significant contributions to their field. In addition to his work as a performer, Gerber is also an educator. He has taught at several universities, including the University of Georgia, the University of South Carolina, and the University of California, San Diego. He is currently a professor of percussion at Georgia State University in Atlanta. Gerber's dedication to contemporary music and his innovative approach to percussion have made him a respected figure in the classical music world. His performances and collaborations with composers have pushed the boundaries of what is possible with percussion, and his work as an educator has inspired a new generation of percussionists. Stuart Gerber's contributions to the world of classical music will undoubtedly continue to be felt for years to come.More....
