Hofmann-Engl studied music at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen, where he received his diploma in composition and conducting. He also studied with renowned composers such as György Ligeti, Karlheinz Stockhausen, and Mauricio Kagel. During his studies, Hofmann-Engl developed a unique style that combined elements of contemporary music with traditional classical music. After completing his studies, Hofmann-Engl began working as a freelance composer and conductor. He quickly gained recognition for his innovative compositions and was commissioned to write works for various orchestras and ensembles. Some of his most notable works include his Symphony No. 1, which was premiered by the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in 1992, and his opera "Der Fliegende Holländer," which was premiered at the Bayreuth Festival in 1995. Hofmann-Engl's music is characterized by its complex harmonies, intricate rhythms, and use of unconventional instruments and techniques. He often incorporated electronic music and computer-generated sounds into his compositions, creating a unique blend of acoustic and electronic music.
