Christopher Robinson was a British composer and conductor who was born on October 5, 1936, in Nottingham, England. He was the son of a church organist and choir director, which exposed him to music at a young age. Robinson began his musical education at the age of eight when he started taking piano lessons. He later learned to play the organ and became a chorister at St. Paul's Cathedral in London. Robinson's musical education continued at the Royal College of Music in London, where he studied composition with Herbert Howells and conducting with Sir Adrian Boult. He also studied at King's College, Cambridge, where he was a choral scholar and later became the director of music. Robinson's career as a composer began in the 1960s, and he quickly gained recognition for his choral works. His compositions were often inspired by his love of the Anglican choral tradition, and he was known for his ability to write music that was both beautiful and accessible. Some of his most famous works include "The Lord is My Shepherd," "A Hymn to the Virgin," and "The Risen Lord." In addition to his work as a composer, Robinson was also a respected conductor. He was the director of music at St. George's Chapel, Windsor Castle, from 1972 to 1991, where he conducted the choir in numerous performances and recordings. He was also the director of music at Christ Church Cathedral in Oxford from 1991 to 1996. Throughout his career, Robinson received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to music. In 1992, he was awarded the CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) for his services to music. He was also a Fellow of the Royal College of Music and a Fellow of the Royal School of Church Music. Robinson continued to compose and conduct until his death on July 7, 2013, at the age of 76. His legacy lives on through his music, which continues to be performed and enjoyed by audiences around the world.
